Brass and liquid soaps

13th Mercosur Biennial

"In Your Hands" is a piece created with brass soap dispensers, texts, and liquid soaps to be placed in the bathrooms of the exhibition space. The soap fragrances range from familiar scents, which we typically already have in our olfactory memory and are easily recognized, to some more abstract, less obvious, so to speak. This spectrum, varying from familiar to more complex scents, invites the visitor to revisit their memories of what those smells mean and even to create new memories in the present.

The prominence of relationships between smells, words, and memory is of interest to me when I explore them in my works. The narrative of the scents is enhanced by the texts accompanying each soap dispenser. Drawing from my personal memories, I provide clues about what those scents might signify at an individual level, but also collectively, broadening the perspective and perception of the visitor regarding the existence of the scent and its use as an artistic language.

The title of the artwork alludes to the individual responsibility of the subject in the practice of handwashing, which gained even more significance in the fight against Covid-19. It also suggests the possibility that there is something more in one's hands, in this case, the scents, and where they can lead you—depending solely on the individual memories of each person.
